Mechanical approach to surface tension and capillary phenomena

چکیده
Many textbooks dealing with surface tension favor the thermodynamic approach (minimization of some potential such as free energy) over mechanical (balance forces) to describe capillary phenomena, stating that latter is flawed and misleading. Yet, more intuitive for students than energy minimization, does not require any knowledge thermodynamics. In this paper we show phenomena can be unmistakably described using approach, long system on which forces act properly defined. After reminding microscopic origin a tangential tensile force at interface, derive Young-Dupr{\'e} equation, emphasizing relation should interpreted an interface condition contact line, rather balance equation. This correct interpretation avoids misidentification acting given system. Moreover, reliable method correctly identify define control volume embed line its surface. Finally, illustration method, apply in variety ways classic example: derivation equilibrium height rise (Jurin's law).

Capillary Phenomena on a Liquid Surface
Contraction of a liquid sheet of an incompressible Newtonian fluid in a passive ambient fluid is studied computationally to provide insights into the dynamics of capillary wave created during contraction. The problem composed of the Navier-Stokes system is associated with initial and boundary conditions that govern the time evolution of the capillary wave and the pressure and velocity fields wi...
متن کاملMechanical surface tension governs membrane thermal fluctuations.
We use analytical considerations and computer simulations to show that the membrane spectrum of thermal fluctuations is governed by the mechanical and not the intrinsic tension. Our study highlights the fact that the commonly used quadratic approximation of the Helfrich effective Hamiltonian is not rotationally invariant. We demonstrate that this nonphysical feature leads to a calculated mechan...
متن کاملIncreased surface tension decreases pulmonary capillary volume and compliance.
Increased surface tension is an important component of several respiratory diseases, but its effects on pulmonary capillary mechanics are incompletely understood. We measured capillary volume and specific compliance before and after increasing surface tension with nebulized siloxane in excised dog lungs. The change in surface tension was sufficient to increase lung recoil 5 cm H(2)O at 50% tota...
متن کاملMicro/nano Surface Tension Measurement by 2d-capillary Wave Resonance
The analysis of capillary waves in confined microspace by quasi-elastic laser scattering (QELS) method enables surface tension measurements. In contrast to previous works, a simple single-beam-focusing method based on spontaneous capillary wave resonance with its confined size is proposed. The capillary wave resonance has been successfully demonstrated in confined two-dimensional micro surface ...
